Fall 2019 Athletic Information and Summer Letter

Dear EDS Parents and Students in Grades 5-8,

The Athletic Department is gearing up for the 2019 – 2020 campaign and getting all our ducks in a row before we unleash the Panthers on the league. This letter is jam-packed with important updates and reminders, so please take a moment to read on.

There are many new and exciting things happening this year with EDS athletics.  The new stadium, auxiliary field, and Jackson Cross County trails will open this fall; more news about these facilities will be coming out over the next few weeks.

We have officially added two new sports to our athletic program.  This past winter season we participated in the Augusta-Aiken Middle School League (AAMSL) Bowling Tournament, and won!  This year during the winter season we will run an 8 - 10 week AAMSL bowling league season with schools in the league going head-to-head.  More details will be released later in the fall. In addition, the Athletic program will participate in the GISA Interscholastic Clay Target Shooting Championships.  The season length is from August to November. Student-Athletes will be able to duel participate on the shooting team and any other fall and or winter team. More information will be available at the Augusta 12 orientation meeting.

1) Athletic Department General Meeting/Orientation and Team meetings: Monday, August 12, from 3 to 4:15 p.m. in the EDS gym. We strongly encourage all parents and students interested in participating in EDS athletics this year to attend this Annual General Meeting and Orientation.

  • 3:00 - 3:20  - General Athletic Department Mtg. and Orientation: This general meeting is for all 5th - 8th-grade parents and students interested in participating in EDS athletics as part of the PantherNation during any season this year.

  • 3:20 - 4:15 - Fall Team-Specific meetings: These breakout sessions are for the parents and students interested in participating in a specific fall sport. Locations will be announced in the 3:00 general session.

    • In team meetings, you will receive more detailed information about the particular sport in which your son or daughter will be a participant.

  • 4:30 - 5:30 - Shooting Team Orientation:  This meeting is for all students and parents interested in joining the EDS Shooting Team.

2) Health Forms: All athletes must have all health forms completed and turned into the front office by the first day of school. The required forms that parents will need can only be accessed through the NEW Parent Portal.  Instructions were emailed to parents in May and June.

3) Game Schedules: The game schedules and driving directions to away games can be found on the EDS Athletics website at

4) Contact Information: If you need to reach me, please email me at, or call my direct line at 706-261-0111. As always, my door is open to all visitors. I can be found at EDS most days this summer; however, my hours may vary depending upon the day. If you would like to discuss any ideas about the athletic program, please contact me to schedule a meeting.

5) Fifth Grade participation

Fifth graders can try out for any middle school team.  However, safety will be considered in the team tryouts, so physical size will be part of the player evaluation, along with skill level. In football, for example, 5th graders who try out will participate fully in practices but will compete only in occasional JV or "5th quarter" games, unless we are confident that they have the physical size and skills necessary to safely compete against eighth-graders.

6) Fall Team Information

Below is information on each fall team, including contact information for the head coaches. Please add these emails to any contact lists you may already have for future outreach.

Thank you all for your continued support of the EDS athletic program. Enjoy the rest of your summer and stay cool. Go Panthers!
